about gabby!
Gabrielle (Gabby) Hinz is a fashion designer focusing on knitwear and childrenswear, and an alumni of the Savannah College of Art and Design. Born in New Jersey and growing up in Tampa, FL, Gabby works to create a living and breathing connection with the natural world around her. Growth, sustainable practice [where possible!], constant questioning and exploration, the cycles of life, and [importantly] individuality are common themes in her collections.
Growing up with a love of cartoons and comics, embracing a childish view of creation became an outlet to express without boundaries for Gabby. An innate tactile curiosity drives her process: a lifelong pastime of collecting stickers, beads, yarns, swatches, stuffed animals, magazine pages, and other miscellaneous objects and materials inspires a scrapbooking style of building collections. Interaction is essential!
The strength of intuition gives way to strong yet sweet silhouettes for the wearer themselves to explore and discover as they run, touch, and scream their way through life.
Now working mainly with childrenswear and juniors, Gabby hopes to help the growing explore their innermost wishes and find their own true connection to the world - through her designs!
Pursuing natural exploration, like mindless doodles, is where she finds the most inspiration for design. Sifting through endless confusing creations, being struck by one, and then building on it creates her favorite collections. Her personal art and designing fashion collections go hand in hand and influence one another. The feeling of freedom to create is blissful and encourages the process.
Gabby found comfort in simple drawing during school, even when it was discouraged. That outlet continues to connect her with her younger self. She noticed that like the developing doodles in the margins of her homework, what your mind does on its’ own is the most meaningful.
After spending most of her life looking towards a degree in engineering, she realized that what she actually wanted to make time for, was art. Beginning by wanting to show off her art in school by wearing it, altering clothes, and painting on t-shirts and jeans became an eagerness to understand and study fashion.
Gabby’s senior fashion collection MAINTAINING CHARACTER was selected by an industry panel to be 1 out of 40 student collections to walk in the 2024 SCAD Fashion Show.
